Gregor Saladin Presents: “Emil Frey-Highland’s Most Famous Adopted Son”

Visiting the U.S. from Switzerland, Biographer Gregor Saladin will be at Latzer Library to share highlights from the life of Emil Frey. Emil spent decisive years of his life in Highland and fought in the Civil War as a volunteer in the Illinois Infantry. After returning to Switzerland, he entered politics serving as Switzerland’s ambassador to the United States from 1882 to 1888. He was a member of the Swiss government from 1891 to 1897 and then served as president of the Swiss Confederation in 1894.

Mr. Saladin’s talk will cover:

-Emil’s youth in Switzerland

-His emigration and life in Highland

-The civil war and his imprisonment

-His return to Switzerland and his political and social rise
